The Co-op on the telly!!

Has anyone seen the ad yet?

To be honest its not bad really but............

It must have cost a fortune..and we know who ultimately pays for that don't we!

Oh and........Why have they used and paid for actors and not used actual staff??? Mmm
I think they may have made a mistake there.!

Haven’t seen it – and don’t intend to pick up a Corrie habit waiting for it to come on!

It raises so many questions, the most important of which are not the obvious ones.

For example, does it benefit consumers to ‘drop with the Co-op’? Is the People’s Undertaker really on the side of the people? Does it offer a highly personal service? Does it offer value for money? On all counts, emphatically, no. If you were to measure the service offered by the Co-op against that offered by a hardworking independent funeral director (like you) the Co-op would come an ignominious second. Does it pass on to its clients the benefits of the economies of scale it enjoys? Absolutely not. To say that it is profitable is an understatement. Having in mind the spirit in which the Co-op was founded (by working people for working people), I think you could say that it is exploitative.

Its aggressive selling of funeral plans is not client focussed. It is an effort to gain tomorrow’s market share today, and it poses a grave threat to independent funeral directors. This is the sort of corporate greed which has lately become very unfashionable.

What is the ideal size of a funeral director’s business? Small enough so that everybody knows your name. While we may prefer Tesco to the little greengrocer on the corner, when it comes to the death of a loved one we reject the production line systems of the Co-op and prefer the craft skills of an independent funeral director.

Lastly, how well managed is the Co-op Group? It has a chequered history. Could it go the way of Woolworth’s? Hmnn. Good question! What price your funeral plan then?!

Sorry. This ad fills me with misgivings. It also makes me angry.

Hi Charles,
Funny you should mention the co-op's funeral plan. They have just cancelled their "if i should die" service which allowed you to leave details of the type of funeral you would want.....at a cost of £10.

We have been doing this on our site free for years.

The co-op are now refunding people who have paid!
